Little Britain…big on laughter, little on Britain

Let the laughter begin!

Growing up, I always hoped that I had been born in England and that someday I’d have a chance to return to the Mother Land for good. England has so much to offer – the accents, which sound so cool; sexy men like Martin Freeman and Clive Owen; the candy, especially Jelly Babies; chick lit; rainy weather, the perfect kind to curl up and watch with a cuppa and a good book in hand; and of course, the comedy.

I love all sorts of British humor humour, from Monty Python to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and from “The League of Gentlemen” to “Absolutely Fabulous”. And then there’s “Little Britain”.

Narrated by “Doctor Who” alum Tom Baker, who is fricken hysterical introducing and concluding the show, “Little Britain” features a wide array of characters played by David Walliams and Matt Lucas. I couldn’t even begin to count all of the different characters. There’s Daffid, “the only gay in the village”; handicapped Andy, who is taken care of by the hapless Lou; chav Vicky Pollard; Carol Beer, whose “computer says no…”; Fat Fighter Marjorie Dawes; and “lady” Emily Howard, just to name a few of my favorites.

In addition to Walliams and Lucas’ work on the show, it features a lot of great guest stars. Anthony Stuart Head (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) is featured semi-regularly, and you can also see British legends like Dawn French and Peter Kay in funny guest spots. The cameos are great as well, as you can see below.

Netflix Instant features all three of the TV seasons on Instant, but you can also grab “Little Britain Live” and “Little Britain: USA” on DVD from Netflix. Now, I will say that this show is not for everyone. I find it hilarious, but my little brother, who generally loves British comedy finds it to be bizarre and unfunny. So, take it with a grain of salt. Dip your toe in, and if you find the water comfy, swan dive in, because this show is totally worth it. It’s wrong, smart, awesome and insane. Everything I love in a show.
